IN Magazine & Frontiers Magazine Are Merging
West Hollywood, California (Thursday, February 5, 2009) - The woes afflicting print media continue; West Hollywood’s two gay magazines, IN and Frontiers, will merge into one publication in the next edition, debuting on February 25, according to local media watcher Kevin Roderick. He reports that IN and Frontiers publisher David Stern announced to him that the move would take place, 22 months after Mr. Stern and his partner Mark Hundahl bought Frontiers from the Craig family, which held the firm after founder Bob Craig’s death in 2000. Mr. Stern did not return calls for comment. At the time of the purchase, Mr. Stern said that the original idea behind IN LA was to operate two distinct “brands” under the same management. Frontiers was considered a newsmagazine, whereas IN LA focused on softer features, profiles and entertainment news. “Mark and I founded IN LA with Bob Craig as a partner to operate as two separate publications under one umbrella,” he told WeHoNews. Bob Craig took over Frontiers Magazine shortly after its founding in 1982, and the publication soon became the “go-to bar rag” for lesbian and gay hotspots in the West Hollywood/Hollywood area. Later in the decade Mr. Craig focused the magazine’s attention to a gay male readership in keeping with social and demographic changes taking place in the city. Mr. Craig’s Frontiers played an influential role in West Hollywood’s efforts to gain cityhood in 1984, and remained a vigorous presence in the gay community’s political and social life throughout the decades he ran the magazine. Both magazines survived the economic downturn 2000-2002, worsened by the mini-recession of post-9/11, with Frontiers closing its San Francisco office and ceasing publication of that edition pre-9/11. They apparently rebounded, but the books have gotten smaller as the economic times got harder. The editorial emphasis of the two magazines made a quick flip after the sale, with Frontiers becoming more lifestyle and entertainment focused and IN taking a harder, news-oriented approach.
