Hyper-Graphics, a comprehensive exhibition of the acclaimed Austrian artist’s graphic works. In addition to 26 posters, the exhibition also includes many preparatory drawings, as well as designs for invitations, books, catalogue covers and other collateral materials. In keeping with his customary practice, Rainer has designed the poster for the MAK Center exhibition. Arnulf Rainer is one of the most renowned contemporary Austrian artists. A special group exhibition in which LAAA artists were randomly paired to create non-intuitive collaborative works of art. Two distinct jurors of varying aesthetics then juried the exhibition. Jurors: Sugar Brown, Director, George Billis Gallery & Kent Twitchell, Renowned Artist Solo Shows: Quinton Bemiller - Some Open Ended Stories In Quinton Bemiller's acrylic paintings, abstract elements are layered to suggest the passing of time. Every brush mark, paint splotch and wash of color functions as a milestone in a time-based narrative. Bemiller's impressive manipulation of visual information reveals no firm conclusions, but suggests beautifully rendered resting points on a larger journey. Jaime Ursic - Visual Confection Jaime Ursic is interested in compressing space in a picture to the point where abstraction and representation collapse, and the eye moves between the micro and macro. Marks and color resist becoming a recognizable image. The image she creates becomes simultaneously closer, yet far away, more visceral yet concrete. Gesture becomes graphic under the pressure of a printing press and reads as 3D mark-making. Ursic allows her confections to stray from the literal and instead offer an impression of a moment in time. One's eye is intrigued by her marks on the page—marks that bend, breathe, pirouette and melt in the viewer’s mouth. Dan Monteavaro - Rainy Day Dan Monteavaro’s current series of paintings is a projected glimpse into the inner-mind of a child. Within the pieces that compose Rainy Day, the pervading sense of loneliness forms a bittersweet balance with childlike innocence and curiosity. The cartoon-like figure depicted in the works is ambiguous, with no clear distinction as to animal or gender. This character becomes the embodiment of an imaginary friend with no other purpose than to observe and explore. SILENCE = DEATH: Los Angeles AIDS Activism 1987–2007 Photographs by Chuck Stallard curated by Stuart Timmons June 16th-July 21th Opening Reception Saturday June 16th 7-10pm They stopped the Rose Parade. They shouted down elected officials. They negotiated the building of an AIDS Ward in a public health system that left people with AIDS suffering in hallways due to lack of a dedicated place for them. They were members of ACT UP. Drkrm. Gallery proudly announces the opening of SILENCE = DEATH: Los Angeles AIDS Activism 1987 – 2007, slated for a June 16th opening and running through July 21st. Commemorating the 20th anniversary of ACT UP/Los Angeles, the exhibition features the work of Chuck Stallard, who documented one of the most dramatic and successful protest groups in recent history. The AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP) became a national and world-wide movement, with one of its most effective chapters in Los Angeles. ACT UP/LA's quite effective strategy was to mix angry street activism with hometown media-savvy. The group was known for its smart graphics and catchy slogans (“He Kills Me” read the caption for a poster of President Ronald Reagan, who failed to act on or mention AIDS in the critical earliest years of the pandemic). ACT UP worked nationally as well as locally, initiating such federal programs as compassionate access to drugs still under FDA review, and demanding universal healthcare as the first step to responding to AIDS. With its core of gay male activists, ACT UP formed progressive coalitions to press for a women’s right to choose, fair labor practices, and a diversion of tax dollars from foreign invasions to domestic healthcare. Silence = Death revives some of the most dramatic moments captured by a photographer never afraid to put his lens in the fray. Chuck Stallard, a member of ACT UP/LA as well as its photographic chronicler, had access to the calm and the storms of AIDS activism. Because the group had to fight for the attention of mainstream media, and because many of the actions carried out by ACT UP members were crafted to provoke authorities, Stallard's work benefited not from distance but from proximity. Possessing both the trust of his fellow activists and the fearlessness to step towards charging police instead of away from them, he managed to capture history. Exhibition curator Stuart Timmons writes about Los Angeles, gay life, and his own imagination. His biography of gay movement founder Harry Hay was a Book of the Month Club selection, and his recent book, Gay L.A., made the Los Angeles Times best-seller list. Timmons’ writing has appeared in several anthologies, as well as national and local magazines. He has worked at several non-profit organizations, including as Executive Director for ONE, the National Gay & Lesbian Archives. drkrm. gallery is an exhibition space dedicated to fine art photography, cutting edge and alternative photographic processes, and the display and survey of popular cultural images. Regular gallery hours are Tues-Saturday 11am-5pm. All gallery events are free and open to the public. http://www.drkrm.com/ dkrm gallery is located in Glassell Park at 2121 San Fernando Road, Suite 3 IT’S EVERYONE’S FAVORITE SUBJECT. So Joan comes up with some interesting payback: During the course of the night’s festivities, in a truth-telling party game, Joan will suddenly challenge the group to swap mates for the evening. Will the others go for it, or will they be shocked? If they do go for it, who will it hurt? Their kids are all away at summer camp. And, it’s just sex, right? Drawn in part from classical illustrations like those of John James Audubon, her large-scale birds become reinvented icons or allegorical figures, floating among grids, timelines, and human bones. Her work engages the historical tradition of classifying biological phenomena, and it raises questions about the scientific stance toward knowledge that natural histories suggest: the many ways we know, or presume to know, about the physical world. Leslie Yagar - Fleeting Moments Fleeting Moments happen at 40 mph. Daily commutes are like monotonous narratives that are accompanied by the ever-changing random compositions that pass through the windshield. Within each image the ephemeral acts of nature are at play and briefly entwine within the moment to create a complex relationship of short duration. The puffy white balls of cherry blossoms make an unremarkable tree spectacular for a week. The swift black dart of a crow reveals a lovely web of overlapping tree tops, and the filtered sunlight on a stormy day brings new dimension to the skyline. We coalesce within these environments that pass in a brief moment. The images that flash before us are seldom noticed during a hurried commute. By the time the destination has been reached the narrative has become a blur. Yet, by extracting a few moments we allow ourselves time to ponder just how much we missed along the way. Carles Barrett, a successful doctor in his early sixties, with a marriage of over three decades and a loving adult daughter, has all the trappings of success -- both emotionally and materially, until a young television journalist enters his life as his lover. As a result, Charles comes out to his wife and daughter causing repercussions for his family, his new lover and himself. OUT LATE explores many issues not addressed often enough in the gay community; the senior male as an object of sexual attraction, gay intergenerational relationships and the process of coming out of the closet much later in life. OUT LATE could be about anybody’s father or husband, among the thousands of mature men who are discovering their sexualities in middle age and beyond and flocking to accepting gay communities like Palm Springs, California or Fort Lauderdale, Florida. This moving and deeply personal story is sure to strike a chord with many families who have been dealing with accepting oneself much later in life. June 30, 2007 ( Saturday ) Pet Pride Is Returning! Gay & Lesbian Center Offers GLBT Seniors A Second Chance for That Perfect Prom on June 30 LOS ANGELES, May 24, 2007—For far too many gay men and lesbians, high school prom meant struggling through an awkward evening with a friend of the opposite sex as a “date” while secretly wishing to be dancing cheek-to-cheek with a same-sex sweetheart. Now, thanks to the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center’s Seniors Program, more than 100 elder gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender men and women will have a second chance for that perfect evening at the Center’s 9th annual Senior Prom, held 5:30-9:30 p.m. June 30 in the courtyard of the Center’s Village at Ed Gould Plaza, 1125 N. McCadden Place. “Many of our community’s seniors have never had a chance to attend a dance or social event where they could feel comfortable and safe in showing affection for a same-sex partner,” says Julie Kliska, manager of the Center’s Seniors Program. “Our Senior Prom is a great opportunity for seniors to let their hair down and just be themselves in a safe and supportive environment.” July 1, 2007 ( Sunday ) BUKOWSICAL! Written by Spencer Green & Gary Stockdale Music by Gary Stockdale Directed by Joe Peracchio LIMITED WORKSHOP ENGAGEMENT BEGINS SUNDAY, JULY 1AT KING KING IN HOLLYWOOD FOR FOUR WEEKS ONLY! June 8, 2007…LOS ANGELES…The See You Next Tuesday Company of Los Angeles is proud to present a new workshop production of the hilarious musical comedy, BUKOWSICAL! prior to its engagement at the New York International Fringe Festival. Written by Spencer Green & Gary Stockdale, with Music by Gary Stockdale and Directed by Joe Peracchio, BUKOWSICAL! takes the form of a backer's audition held by an edgy fictional Los Angeles-based theatre troupe, the Sacred Angel Fist Circle of Note Gang (SAFCNG), trying to raise money for a (misguided) musical about the great besotted writer Charles "Buk" Bukowski. BUKOWSICAL! will perform every Sunday night for four weeks only, beginning Sunday, July 1 at KING KING, 6555 Hollywood Blvd. in Hollywood. BUKOWSICAL! is a hysterical, no-holds-barred homage to Broadway, edgy theatre companies, and, of course, Bukowski himself. It also has a lot of songs with dirty words. It's the musical for people who love musicals as much as for those who hate them. BUKOWSICAL! will perform for four weeks, every Sunday night at 7:00pm beginning Sunday, July 1 through Sunday, July 22 at KING KING, 6555 Hollywood Blvd in Hollywood. Ticket prices are $25.00 (includes drink ticket, advance purchases only) for all performances. For tickets, please call 1-800-595-4849 or online at www.tix.com or www.bukowsical.com. July 2, 2007 ( Monday ) NONE July 3, 2007 ( Tuesday ) Wild Child -- Live Music -- 7/3/2007 -- Also Playing the Whiskey on August 24th -- The Whiskey -- 8901 Sunset Boulevard -- West Hollywood, CA -- Wild Child is a Los Angeles based act with 20 solid years of performance in the competitive L.A. Music Scene. Faithfully re-creating a live Doors Concert on stage. This is not a typical Doors tribute band! The music is painstakingly reproduced and combined with the voice, look and essence of Jim Morrison live on stage (performed by lead singer Dave Brock). ONLINE TICKETING: www. brownpapertickets.com * * * * * * “The Catskill Sonata” is reopening at the Matrix Theatre in Hollywood after a successful run at the Hayworth Theater. Set in June, during the late 1950’s, “The Catskill Sonata” is a funny and poignant story of activism, desire and loss. Set apart from larger and lavish Catskillls hotels, Rosen’s caters to left-leaning writers, musicians and artists of the day such as Dave Vaughn, a brilliantly failed writer. Hiding from his losses past and present, Dave dispenses advice from the patio about everything---especially sex and writing---to young bellhop Irwin. For twenty years, Annie Rosen has attracted a bohemian group of guests who argue politics, listen to music, ramble in nature and, sometimes, fall in love. But this year is different. The blacklist looms and many of Anne’s friends are losing their jobs, and changing times are luring travelers abroad.
