Mr. Wright, who had led law enforcement on a 3 month international manhunt before his capture on October 11, 2011 in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. pleaded guilty to money laundering, conspiracy, drug possession and other charges.
Prosecutors claimed Wright bought the cocaine in California (via Mexico) for $20,500 a kilogram and sold it in New York for five times that amount. They estimate he shipped over 200 kilograms in the months before his 2011 arrest.
Prosecutors said the drugs were hidden inside luxury vehicles that were being transported in tractor-trailers. The car carrier companies were not aware of the criminal activity.
Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota said four others linked to the case have either pleaded guilty or will plead guilty shortly.
“Mr. Wright will live his life not in Southern California but in an upstate correctional facility to ponder what misery he’s caused by selling cocaine on the streets of Suffolk County,” DA Spota told a local Long Island nwespaper.
District Attorney Spota described Mr. Wright as the “architect of a pipeline supplying west coast cocaine to Suffolk as well as large shipments of marijuana, smuggled from Canada in shipments weighing up to 300 pounds, to Long Island.”
He dismissed the defendant’s “eleventh hour claim that he now understands the dangers of drugs” as coming from an individual who “used his millions in drug profits to fly on private planes, stay at the best hotels, charge an average of $50,000 to $100,000 monthly on his credit cards, acquire a financial interest in at least ten race horses and buy ownership interests in a number of multimillion dollar homes in Hollywood, California.
“His decadence was funded primarily by street sales in this county of cocaine that he purchased in California for $20,500 a kilo and sold here for five times that amount after cutting the powder with Inositol,” said DA Spota.
