Harvey Milk Day Community Photo Project

May 13, 2013

In anticipation of the fourth annual Harvey Milk Day, the City of West Hollywood is hosting a Community Photo Project to create a series of photos featuring residents and visitors with signs featuring quotes from Milk’s speeches.

The images from the photo sessions will be displayed on the City’s Flickr photo sharing site as well as shown on WeHoTV on Harvey Milk Day, May 22, 2013. Participants are also encouraged to take and post their own photos on Instagram and Twitter with the hashtag #wehoHMD.

The photo sessions will be held at three different times and locations:

Wednesday, May 15, 2013 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the lobby of the West Hollywood City Hall,  8300 Santa Monica Boulevard

Sunday, May 19, 2013 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in Plummer Park, 7377 Santa Monica Boulevard

Sunday, May 19, 2013 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. along Santa Monica Boulevard near Robertson Boulevard

In 2009, the California State Legislature passed Senate Bill 572 designating every May 22 as “Harvey Milk Day,” commemorating the birthday of Milk, the first openly gay man elected to public office in California.

In 1978, Milk won a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and was in office only 11 months before he was murdered alongside San Francisco Mayor George Moscone. But during Milk’s brief political career he made great strides on issues including making the government responsible to individuals, gay liberation, and the importance of neighborhoods to the health of the city.

Milk’s story, message and legacy are globally celebrated on his birthday to give hope and inspire disenfranchised communities.
