Afriat speaks out on anti-lobbying bill

Steve Afriat, the apparent target of special legislation being presented tonight before the West Hollywood City Council, speaks out about the bill and what he calls its silliness in this must listen interview.

In an exclusive chat with WeHo News, Mr. Afriat, one of the most sought after and busiest campaign consultants , fundraisers and land-use consultants in the county, ranking as one of those consultants that “runs Los Angeles” in a 2012 USC Annenberg School of Communications & Journalism special feature, gives some perspective on the roles of land-use and campaign consultants.

He asks two pertinent questions:

What is the problem? What is the demonstrable problem that someone who is running political campaigns has had some undue influence that would not have otherwise happened?

In an exclusive chat with WeHo News, Mr. Afriat, one of the most sought after and busiest campaign consultants , fundraisers and land-use consultants in the county, ranking as one of those consultants that “runs Los Angeles” in a 2012 USC Annenberg School of Communications & Journalism special feature, gives some perspective on the roles of land-use and campaign consultants.

In a passionate soliloquy he reveals interesting perspectives on the realpolitik of power, how West Hollywood has become one of the premier gay centers of power by leveraging the value of its land into donations that create social change across the state and nation, and how petty local pols undermine that exercise of power by getting caught up in petty, bitter debates over density, traffic and parking.

Mr. Afriat, who was very active in the movement to make WeHo a city, suggests that the “slow-growthers” begin to demand a cessation of the city services that accrue to whole city’s benefit before they decide they do not want a project built because it will directly affect their quality of life.

He takes off the gloves and calls out what he calls the “bitter old ladies” in West Hollywood who seem resentful of their inability to run the city and take it out on incumbents who are doing an exemplary job.

It makes for some down and dirty political listening bound to impress – whether favorably or negatively will depend on your stance on the issues – but impressed you will be.
