The Whip - Transgender Courage in the Wild West
03/14/2013
Book review by Rick Sandack, West Hollywood, California

Normally, reviewing a book about a Wells Fargo stagecoach driver named Charley Parkhurst as dramatized in Karen Kondazian’s debut novel “The Whip” doesn’t do it for me. But Charlie Parkhurst was not your normal everyday Whip, the name given to the elite of the elite of stage coach drivers.

That’s because Charley Parkhurst was a girl. Born Charlotte Darkey Parkhurst in Lebanon, New Hampshire in 1812, she was an only child whose mother died shortly after her birth and, abandoned by her father, was put up for adoption at an early age.

Subsequently escaping from the orphanage dressed as a boy, she was hired out as stable hand where she developed a powerful, lifelong kinship with horses, coupled with an uncanny ability to ride, handle and talk to them on par with the Horse Whisperer.

Like a cross between Barbra Streisand in “Yentl” meets Clint Eastwood in “The Unforgiven” The Whip is an extraordinary tale of transgender courage in the wild west, mixing fact with fiction when Charlotte, now in her early 20’s, goes on a revenge quest to hunt down her one time childhood friend, Lee Clinton, responsible for the murderous lynching of her African American husband’s and death of her infant child.

To facilitate her quest, she cross-dresses as a guy, trading her female garb and underpinnings for blue jean overalls, leather boots, buffalo skin coat, embroidered leather gloves to conceal her soft, feminine hands, short-cropped hair and a Texas cowboy hat while binding her ample breasts to her chest with sturdy cloth.

Once transitioned into Charley, putting her savvy horse skills to work, she becomes a Whip, embarking on a dangerous and deadly journey while experiencing the adrenal rush and thrill ride in a profession reserved exclusively for men.

As a well-known actor, Karen Kondazian isn’t intimidated by dramatic roles, winning the coveted LA Critics Award for Best Actress in The Rose Tattoo by Tennessee Williams who was so enthralled by her performance, he gave her carte blanch to produce any of his plays without paying royalties during his lifetime--an endorsement sealed with a kiss.

As a first time novelist, challenged by the dramatic assignment of bringing Charley Parkhurst to life, Kondazian immersed herself in the role with the same gutsy intensity she approaches theatrical parts, infusing it with her own innate femininity while employing method acting techniques taught to her by the premiere stage coach at the time, namely Lee Strasberg of famed Actor’s Studio, where she is lifetime member. She’s also a longtime teacher at the Lee Strasberg School of Acting in West Hollywood.

“It’s all about the work,” said Karen quoting Strasberg’s ritualistic mantra. And in a six year labor of love to complete The Whip, she had her work cut out for her, sans personal letters, diaries and other non-existent documents to help flesh out Charley Parkhurst’s complicated, bi-gendered character, at a time when coming out meant coming out of saloon where she drank, swore, gambled, chewed and spit chewing tobacco with the boys vs. exposing her cross dressing, gender identity secret which would have only kicked her back into the kitchen where women belonged. And to Charley Parkhurst, that was never an option

She was a breed apart,” said Kondazian about Parkhurst’s brave, free spirited, bi-sexual nature who orchestrated her own success in an against all odds struggle to live the life of her choice by becoming the very force that opposed her, a man. And not just any man, adds Kondazian, but a top notch Whip manning a team of 6 horses pulling a state if he art Concord Carriage that could get you from San Juan Bautista to “Frisco” in a matter of a days with time out for near death encounters with murderous outlaws

Despite the novel’s shortcomings and a sporadically disjointed narrative, what I liked most about Kondazian’s transgender novel is the strength of this real life historical character, and how Charlie Parkhurst survived, in a landscape dominated by men, 150 years before gay liberation, pulling off her gender identity coup to her last dying day while sending riveting, shock waves of disbelief through the throngs of macho males she befriended during her lifetime that was nothing short of astonishing. “Everybody knew Charley’s skills as a driver and outlaw killer,” read the New York Times obituary in December 18, 1879. “What they didn’t know was that Parkhurst was really a woman.”
