Thank heavens for real news - without comments
Op-ed by Werner Haas, West Hollywood, California
With newspaper circulation way down, I am assuming that most people (read: the lowest common denominator) now get their news from TV.
The problem that creates is there are very few real "news" professionals left to be found anywhere, both off- and in front of the cameras, but especially in the local news.
Werner Haas is a West Hollywood writer whose latest novel is named "Wasps."
The whole focus of news these days; what is news and who is really professionally qualified to be a "reporter" or "anchor" has changed and the decline in standards bothers me.
I grew up listening to Edward R. Murrow, on the radio, intoning, "This----is London." One could hear sirens and explosions behind his voice.
He was authoritative. He knew what he was talking about (because he enterprised it, did the interviews and wrote it himself) and he was properly trained in the news field (not the news "business").
There were a good number of professional journalists, on radio, in the newspapers, in the newsreels, who brought us news and commentary.
We trusted what they said because while they were hardly unbiased themselves, they were thoroughly trained and thoroughly professional to hide their biases and personal feelings.
That led to our trusting them, because they did their job and did it well.
After my Korean War service, I got a job at CBS, and I met, worked for and with many of these professional news people- Murrow, Sevareid, Cronkite, Collingwood, Edwards, etc.
Each of them was a fascinating, well-versed personality on and off the air. I will never forget those times.
I am saddened by what the news business has turned into- newsreaders, racially "proper" (i.e., female, Hispanic, Asian, above average looking) and well trained to read the TelePrompter.
To me, especially the vacuous females on HLN seem to get their "communication" degrees from some online school and their jobs through the casting couch.
Most of them have little idea about the world in crisis other than what they read or to which they are trained to nod sagely.
Our local news programming and reporting is just as sadly lacking in visionary professionals. And worse, these so-called news sites allow the ignorant and the most shrill shills to post anonymous comments about the articles – or anything that irks them – in the most heinous language.
Is it any wonder that when it comes to "real" news, there are so many letters flooding WeHo News thanking the editor for bringing "real" news, well researched and authoritatively written, something they can find neither in major mainstream media nor in the blogosphere.
I don't give a rat's behind about Kim Kardashian’s latest visit to a milkshake emporium, anything at all about Lindsay Lohan, or where the next big time chef is going (to eventually fail).
The Murrows of my world must be spinning in their graves at the prominence of "successes" like Jane Velez Mitchell and Nancy Grace.
Thank the journo gods for WeHo News and some few that carry the torch for them. Success is not in how many people glance at your pages, but how well you provide the service that is the news.
This commentary originally appeared in 2010 and has been updated somewaht to fit the time.
Werner Haas is a West Hollywood writer whose latest novel is named "Wasps." | Summary: Long Island is no longer a place for complacent suburbanites. It is now a festering ground for anti-social activity by bored or power-hungry teens.
The Wasps is a story of such a neo-Nazi gang made up of otherwise "ordinary" middle-class young people.
