A WeHo music venue makes its second farewell of the decade this week – this time permanently.
The Key Club on Sunset, a Sunset Strip live music club that operated for nearly 20 years will bid their fans and bands a fond adieu on March 15, according to a press release.
“It is with a heavy heart that I share this news with you,” said Operations Manager Ian Shepp in a press release. “This is our final goodbye as the Key Club on Sunset. It has been an honor and privilege to share our passion for music with you.”
The venue, at 9039 Sunset Blvd. at Doheny, is located along the world-famous stretch of music clubs – Only in West Hollywood – that includes The Roxy, the Rainbow Bar and Grill and Whisky-a-Go-Go.
The club shuttered itself for a few weeks in late 2009, reopening in January 2010 with a new infusion of capital. “We’ve reached an agreement with our landlord that we would respectively not discuss this matter until the new project is announced on the 15th,” said Mr. Shepp. ”As a Hollywood native and life-long fan of live music, I personally look forward to continuing my support of the live music culture in Los Angeles through future projects.”
Mr. Shepp brought that new financing in 2009, and prior to his entry into the Key Club je was the principal owner at Madame Royale in Hollywood, as well as the Director of Events and Revenue at the Sunset Entertainment Group. He said in a statement at the time, "We want to bring the Sunset Strip back to what it was known for, a community of music and live entertainment."
The Key Club (known as Billboard Live from 1996-1998) replaced Gazzarri’s, a popular nightclub that held early performances from The Doors and Van Halen, but was demolished in 1995.
