The economy isn’t the only thing that sucks. Proof is reading some of the want ads on Craig’s List, male and female, transgender and “curious.” How true some of these ads really are is problematical.
At my age, I really don’t need to find out. But there are so many ads either explaining they are in a financial mess and looking for work, any sort of work, or these men and women, boys and girls, are truly forthright and willing to sell their bodies to pay bills.
Before Craigs list, there were certain spots in WeHo, Hollywood and elsewhere known to be “cruisey” for male and female and transgender hookers. Some streets were for lowlifes - drug users, alcoholics, mentally disturbed, with low regard for themselves and their johns. Other areas were for what might be considered “legitimate” bodies for sale - college and high school students wanting to earn some extra bucks or possibly to meet a ”sugar daddy.” These were ideal for out-of-towners who could bring them back to their hotels/motels without raising a front desk’s eyebrows.
In those earlier times, there was seldom a pressing urgency, eviction did not stare these young men and women in the face. It was an experience; it was even fun for some, enlightenment for others and seldom was any physical harm done to trick or john. That was before HIV and AIDS.
Today, pleadings are done via the internet instead of at a street corner or in a car. If true, the financial ruin forces some so-called “straights” to bow to pressure and become, as the cliché goes, “gay for pay.” For some, it still is a daring adventure, a risk willing to be taken. To others, the financial situation is truly dire and having someone exploit their body and morality seems the easiest way out.
The perverse reason is that an hour with some older pervert is more rewarding than a 40-hour-a-week McJob.
What is sad is that society shrugs its shoulders, and uses the trite expression “It is what it is.” WeHo-and are more concerned about vagrants sleeping in the park or on bus benches than the agonies of broke young people unhooking bras or unzipping jean fly fronts.
The way I see it, much of Craig’s List personals and want ads are truly obituaries for mental health, morality and honest labor. The Missionary or any other position should not be the key to survival for the next generation.
