The people who run for office in West Hollywood over the past few years surely feel like the Chicago Cubs. You go out and play, you give it your best - and yet you never get to the World Series. Other teams with more money to buy stars in larger venues get the publicity and the rings.

People running as challengers for West Hollywood City Council, a prize far less worthy than a World Series ring, spend tens of thousands of dollars - some of it their own money, and yet they have little chance of winning. It’s like the curse of Wrigley Field. Except at Wrigley the Home Team usually loses, while in WeHo the incumbents almost always win (except when there is a death of a serious miscalculation).
What is also overkill is to trot out “endorsements” from office holders who neither live in nor have any say about WeHo activities. It’s like President Obama endorsing the Prime Minister of England for reelection. Unlike WeHo, Britain only has one Queen and she is not running for office.
I alluded to it before, but I cannot understand why some of our civic leaders insist on running time and time again for offices that pay little, garner little publicity or fame, and really do not matter in the daily activities of progress (or lack thereof) in our little village, activities ably conducted by our city manager, Paul Arevalo.
Can’t they have a “been there-done that” mentality that allows them to fade gracefully into the shadows? Must voter ennui bring the same ego-driven personalities to the fore every election? There must be a horde of potential voters who stay away en masse because, shrugging their shoulders, they believe the same people with the same ideas and the same backing will win regardless of taunts or complaints.
I write this prior to March 5 - but I am assured the outcome will be the same as it was year after year, ever since I arrived in WeHo in the late 1980s.
“Le plus le change, le meme chose le change.” An epigram by Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr translated as “The more it changes, the more it’s the same thing.” He wrote it in 1849, and it remains true to this day.
