Martin accuses Duran of fascism, calls supporters dogs

Tempers frayed last night as candidate for council Steve Martin spoke out against what he called “fascist” actions by council member John Duran, calling Mr. Duran’s campaign volunteers “dogs.”

As he stepped to the podium for his 2:00 public comment, several Duran campaigners in the audience lifted Duran yard signs over their heads. This blocked the view of some observers, who shouted out “rude, rude.” Mayor Jeffrey Prang, holding the gavel, used it to bring order back to the chamber and Mr. Martin said, “Will you please ask the John Duran supporters to leave the room?

“This is just ridiculous. This is the sort of fascist – this better not be on my time – this is really fascist, John,” said the candidate angrily. “Send your dogs out. Then, after a pause, he looked at the Mayor threateningly and said, “I better get my full two minutes.”

Then, demeanor changing dramatically, he spoke for the rest of his two minutes (a total of 2:28 minus a 27 second interruption) about the outpouring of love and affection he experienced in response to the negative campaigning brought down onto his head.

As his time expire, he refused to step away from the podium, saying, “You let these people disrupt my time. I think it’s really typical that you allow this sort of conduct to go on and take from my time.” In the background, a Sheriff’s deputy can be seen leaving his seat and moving forward, as Mr. Martin said, “It shows what a threat I really am to you guys.”
