Term limits leaders Steve Martin (council candidate), Lauren Meister (spokesperson) and Scott Schmidt (campaign manager), Mr. Martin has run for council 7 times and won twice in the 19990s. Mr. Schmidt ran in 2011 and Ms. Meister has run for council twice. Photo courtesy Yes on Measure C Facebook page.
Without meaning to pat myself on the back, I am the one who started the whole ball rolling on this two years ago, as the ballots were being counted during the last election. I have never run for City Council, nor do I ever intend to. You can hold me to that in the future and make me eat my words if that ever changes.
I first spoke to Steve Martin about how one would go about getting term limits on the ballot in time for the next election because of his knowledge and background in law and government. He knew and understood the complicated process of how to compose an initiative correctly on get it on the ballot, as well as what kind of timetable was needed.
We had to work backwards to make sure we followed the proper deadlines. It was a long and complicated process, especially the signature gathering - which as everyone knows by now was predominantly done by West Hollywood volunteers - and NOT by outside paid signature gatherers.
As the new election was looming upon us last spring and early summer, I realized it was getting late and Steve and I began organizing. The first thing we did was invite a handful of people we trusted to a small gathering at my place.
Of that initial group of six people, half had in fact run for office and potentially would run again. At least we hoped so. The other half - myself included - had never run, and speaking only for myself, have no intention of ever running for office. The other two have also expressed no desire to ever run, but it is not for me to say.
Also, of the six of us, only one was a Republican - contrary to other distortions that are being loosely thrown around as ridiculous scare tactics. The other five of us are rabid Democrats. Yet, somehow we all managed to be on the same page and get something accomplished. Something wonderful, I might add, as I fully expect Tuesday's election to be a landslide in favor of Yes on Measure C.
Therefore, WeHo News insistent and constant painting the Yes on Measure C's initiators as failed campaigners is patently false on every level.
We will see on Tuesday how influential the distorted articles have been. I have been incredibly disappointed in the personal, vindictive and distorted coverage of this issue in the WeHo News this election season and hope to see more objective journalism in the future.
