A couple of things...firstly, thank you to WeHo News for publishing Werner Haas's op-ed. Well, done. His work reminds me of Carleton Cronin's work in that both writers demonstrate civility and eloquence. Perhaps, it struck me because of the contrast to the recent inundation of bordering-on-slander drek, sprinkled with inaccuracies, lies, half-truths and a healthy portion of mud, that has been arriving daily in my mailbox.
One such piece that I received yesterday, sported a list of "visionaries VOTING for John Duran." On that list were the following names: Hon. Paul Koretz, Hon. Eric Garcetti, Hon. Betsy Butler, Hon. Zev Yaroslavsky and the Hon. Howard Berman. Suspiciously absent, were the actual titles of these individuals, replaced by "Hon." Why? Because not one of these individuals lives in West Hollywood. Not one of these individuals can legally vote for John Duran.
Here are the titles that were blatantly omitted: Los Angeles Councilmember Paul Koretz, Los Angeles Councilmember Eric Garcetti, Former CA Assembly member Betsy Butler, Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, Former US Congressman Howard Berman. It would be election fraud for any of these people to vote for John Duran in West Hollywood.
My point? The statement that these people are voting for John Duran is a flat-out lie. It begs the question, how many of the other individuals on the list are not voting for John Duran? The mailer also lists 13 organizations that were "voting" for John Duran. This is not possible, as "organizations" cannot vote. I am in hopes that some of the people listed will have the courage of the late Historic Preservation Commissioner Bruce Kaye, and speak up as he did, about having been pressured by city officials to publicly back candidates not of their choosing.
Secondly, WeHo News, your term limits piece was good but I would like to have seen one of the proponents videos to balance the "paid for videos" by the two city insiders, professionally produced, scripted pieces. Sal Gomez, filmed four or five short videos with regular citizens (two in Russian) and posted them on YouTube and Facebook.
By using Lauren Meister's video it appears to be heavily slanted toward No on C's accusation that the only people who want term limits for West Hollywood are disgruntled former candidates who lost. I would like to have heard from some of the 3,400 citizens who signed the petition to place Measure C on the ballot, instead of just paying lip service to the theory that the only people who want term limits are defeated candidates, which of course, could not be further from the truth.
Perhaps, the video of (regular contributor to WeHo News) Roy Oldenkamp or Sofiya Turin (Russian language) would better counter Donna and Luis as "regular" citizens. Even John D'Amico or Sam Borelli, or any of the other candidates who are pro term limits, but have never lost an election, would better represent the majority of people who will vote YES on C.
The three rejected candidates are an infinitesimal fraction of the over three thousand citizens who put Measure C on the ballot. Using a picture of the three defeated candidates also slanted towards the opposition’s theory the bottom line is the citizens of West Hollywood need to get out and vote and I urge everyone to vote for CHANGE on Tuesday, March 5, 2013.
