Without fanfare – actually, without any notice at all – the park at 1343 North Laurel Avenue, affectionately called Tara, was expanded on Friday.

The project only took a few hours; removing fencing and placing new chain link fences at the lot’s rear and the driveway was a snap. City council members heard about the opened green space and made much ado.Having voted in late January to “stabilize” the house on the largest undeveloped plot of green space left in the city limits until its historic preservation and adaptive re-use can be accomplished, the city’s Public Works division marched double time to open the fences that closed off more than half of the yard.

Mayor Jeff Prang said, “As we begin the public process of determining the future direction of the property, it makes sense to make as much of the property as possible available for the enjoyment of the public."
The opening of the yard to public use is only the first step in the full utilization of the property.

Authorizing $1.5 million for capital improvements, the council also announced a community input process begin holding public meetings to determine the future use of the house.
The move caps a sea change in the city’s approach to the property and highlights a fundamental change in the city’s politics.

The mansion, the largest undeveloped plot of residential land in the city, was deeded to the community by Elsie Weisman, an elderly woman who had lived for decades in the house for use by the community.
Ten years ago, the powers that be in the city put forth plans to build 40 senior housing units on the site without considering other potential community uses for the property.

Park users were ecstatic. Lindsey and Dakota Bouchard, who live across the street from the park, said they were not only surprised but also giddy at the new space. “Dakota loves it,” said Ms. Bouchard on a sunny Sunday afternoon as the dog sniffed new scents heretofore unavailable. "I noticed it yesterday; I'm really glad they did it."

WeHo News took some shots of the side and rear of the house to give readers and idea of how much more space is now available for their use – perspectives of the grand manse not available for over ten years that the side and rear yard has been shut off from public view.
