As someone who has played an active role in the creation and growth of our City long before incorporation, and who cares deeply for this community, I cannot sit on the sidelines of this election. Voters deserve to know the truth about former Councilmember Steve Martin.

I was on the steering committee of CES prior to incorporation when we first fought and won rent control for the County of Los Angeles. When we were on the verge of losing rent control, we fought very hard to create this wonderful city and I decided to run for city council in the incorporation vote in 1984 and have served on various boards and commissions since that time. Steve was once a promising leader of West Hollywood. He was bright and affable and held promise in the minds of many who knew him during his days as an activist.
However, that all changed when he was elected in 1994. Steve exemplified the old adage about power corrupting. Steve became a bully and seemed to thrive on personal attacks. During his time as mayor, he acted as though he had been elected the chief executive of the city. He alienated his colleagues, the staff, businesses, neighbors, the Sheriff’s and anyone else with whom he came in contact. He says he was independent, but the truth is he was simply unable and unwilling to get along with anyone, even in the best interests of the City. Steve was not interested in what was best for the City; he was only interested in waging war with anyone and everyone.
Steve was not voted out of office because he was popular and productive. He was voted out because the constituency was fed up with his personal attacks during council meetings.
Before he was elected in 1994, he was a populist, slow-growth neighborhood activist. On the council he was the developer’s go-to guy. He not only voted for the City’s largest development ever, you would have thought by his actions that he was their paid lobbyist. He took probably the largest political donation ever in the City’s history from the developer of the Gateway. The California Fair Political Practices Commission wrote a scathing assessment of his many campaign violations.
An effective councilmember must be able to work with his colleagues and the community if they hope to be successful and productive. Steve demonstrated he can do neither. Perhaps there’s an important role for a gadfly leveling criticism of the council, but gadflies shouldn’t be on the council.
Steve changed his spots when he was elected in 1994. He reverted to his old ways once he was defeated. There’s no reason to think he won’t change again if returned. After all, you can judge a candidate by what they do and have done, and all of Steve’s rhetoric is contrary to his actions during his years on council. Moreover, for the record, Steve Martin and Steve Afriat were not only friends, but Afriat did work with Steve as a campaign consultant and there are finance statements to prove it.
Steve Martin was the only elected councilmember ever voted out of office – and he was voted out with good reason. I urge anyone considering voting for him, especially those who were not in West Hollywood when he served previously, to simply look at his record or ask a neighbor who remembers how destructive a force he was. West Hollywood should not have to endure another term of Steve Martin on the council.
For more on Steve Martin's past, see "Candidate kettle calling incumbents black" in today's issue of WeHo News.
