The woman who stabbed four shoppers inside the West Hollywood Target store in 2010 was sentenced Friday to 16 years and 8 months in Patton State Hospital. Layla Rosette Trawick, age 36, has been held at the hospital since September 2010 when she was judged to be not guilty by reason of insanity of two counts of attempted murder and one count of assault with a deadly weapon.
The sentence, imposed in Beverly Hills Superior Court, is the maximum penalty for those counts. Ms. Trawick originally pleaded not guilty to nine felony charges in Beverly Hills Courthouse on May 6.
However, after going through two psychiatric examinations that agreed she could not adequately understand the legal proceedings she faced, Judge Maria Stratton, sitting on the County's psychiatric court, Department 5, remanded Ms. Trawick to Patton State Hospital in San Bernardino County for treatment until such time as she develops the mental competency to stand trial.
The sentence handed down last week is acknowledgment that Ms. Trawick is unlikely to regain competency. Media accounts of her past said, "friends and relatives... said she had suffered mental health problems from childhood and had become convinced in the months leading up to the rampage that she was the test subject in a mind-control experiment."
She reportedly used drugs and alcohol to self-medicate, eschewing regular doctor visits and medical treatment. Beverly Hills police arrested Ms. Trawick the previous January for being under the influence in public, releasing her with a citation. A judge dismissed that charge in a hearing held just weeks before the alleged Target knife attack.
The drama took place on May 3, 2010, when reports of a woman armed with two kitchen knives attacking four shoppers at West Hollywood's Gateway Complex Target store came into WeHo News. The attack set off a stampede among customers and left four people wounded; two in critical condition. An off-duty Sheriff’ Deputy Clay Grant Jr. was shopping in the store and took Ms. Trawick, of Antioch, CA, into custody.
The WeHo Station watch commander said the deputy acted quickly to save lives. "He heard a commotion while he was a few aisles away and ran over to see what was going on," said Sgt. Josh Mankini. "He saw the lady with two knives, one of them a butcher knife, dripping with blood, and showed his weapon and ordered her to drop hers.
Pandemonium had already ensued by that time, he said, "We must have got 25 911 calls from inside the store,” After a bleeding victim ran out of Target and reported a man with a gun inside, witnesses presumed and reported a mass shooting had occurred, increasing the blitz of calls.
Patton State Hospital was founded in 1893 as the Southern California State Asylum for the Insane and Inebriates and holds and treats forensic patients, or people found not guilty of their crime by reason of mental illness or who are unfit to plead because of mental illness.
