The GOP vice-presidential nominee, Paul Ryan, told so many fibs his fibula coverings ought to have caught fire.

HAAS-TA LA VISTA: Limits to lives – and terms
02/11/2013
Op-ed by Werner Haas, West Hollywood, California

For some unexplained reason, I had lost the use of two fingers on my left hand, last time I communicated with you. For the next day and a half, well-meaning friends tried to calm my nerves by telling me (a) I had had a mini-stroke or (b) there is obviously a blockage in some artery.

Werner Haas is a West Hollywood writer whose latest novel is named "Wasps."

Then, after a good night’s sleep I woke up and the fingers were back to normal. And I never did go to Lourdes. I did go to my doctor. And he had no explanation except to tell me it had nothing to do with the heart.

I told him my blood pressure must have gone through the roof all weekend long, trying to not pay attention to the helpful diagnoses of friends. He decided to do an EKG, and determined there was a slightly irregular heartbeat. So he set up a visit with a cardiologist for the end of this week, which frightens me even more since I have no symptoms of anything, except anxiety.

Of course, my nerves react to any hint of mortality. I have never been seriously ill all my long life. Now, research on the internet takes up my spare time. I am heartened (pun intended) to learn that more than one out of ten men my age have some sort of atrial fibrillation. So chances are I will one day die of something else. I am now consciously trying to lose some weight, and got talked into eating Activia, which, no matter how they try to disguise it, still tastes like yogurt.

An update on my medical condition: Yes, I do have a slight heart irregularity (I have been accused of not having one at all. This proves you wrong!). So I am now forced to deal with blood thinners, and dieting and watching that I don’t overeat green veggies and salads. But, I am not in danger of leaving this mortal coil so soon (though maybe sooner than I was hoping for).

All this organic and “natural” food craze reminds me of the wise man who said he stopped eating natural foods since he learned most people die of natural causes.

The idea of a limit to one’s life brings to mind the sore WeHo subject of term limits. I do think we need to thank our long-term Council members and turn to some new blood with other ideas.

After all, my membership in the Senior Advisory Council was abruptly curtailed because, in the words of some esteemed City Hall minion, “we need to give others a chance to serve.” It is interesting to note that the only ones so eliminated WERE TWO Russian members and me. Everyone else, no matter how long they’ve served, are still on board. More of limits next time, then.

Term limits is an idea whose time has come; I find that politics in West Hollywood is too much of a game, and one of ego trips. One cannot believe someone wants to be a Council member because of the pay. And to visit another city and to tell someone I’m on the West Hollywood City Council would elicit shrugs at best.

So why do current incumbents, all with well-salaried outside employment, want to keep running for office? There has to be a case of mutual networking, or some other reason. It certainly cannot be measures of achievement that improved the city enormously.

If the advisory boards rotate members out because it seems new blood is desired (at least, that was the reason given me as to why I was not re-appointed to the Senior Advisory Board), what’s good for the goose should be good for the City Council gander. Not everyone looking for votes is deserving of attention of votes, but there certainly are those with ideas that can work, with the intent to not just sit and let the city Manager run things, and certainly those who deserve votes from outside the Boys’ Town cliques.

I am not endorsing, just pointing out the need for change, and give thanks for their service to some, and welcome with open minds others.

Werner Haas is a West Hollywood writer whose latest novel is named "Wasps." Summary: Long Island is no longer a place for complacent suburbanites. It is now a festering ground for anti-social activity by bored or power-hungry teens.

The Wasps is a story of such a neo-Nazi gang made up of otherwise "ordinary" middle-class young people.
