When life burns so brightly…
…the flame can be difficult to extinguish.
Three years ago, December 14th last, a piece entitled “Goodbye Miss Daisy” appeared on these pages.
At the time, Miss Daisy, a rescued dog with more personality than many humans and with a bark which belied her actual size, was given a prognosis of three months due to an inoperable tumor.
When the three months passed, we still were apprehensive about her future.
The months grew into years and we forgot about her condition. Several months ago, however, she began to exhibit signs of the old problem.
This past weekend, she became totally incontinent, stopped eating and preferred to sleep.
Today will be her last day with us – and with the neighbors who came to say hello to her each day for so long.
The vet said, “Well, she’s had a good life.”
I don’t know how one measures a dog’s life, how they are content, happy, sad, etc.
Maybe she would have been happier chasing rabbits in the fields than dodging cars on Robertson.
All I know is that my family enjoyed her company and her response to their hugs and ball-paying and rope-tugging.
Maybe that was enough for her.
I only know she never complained. Not in any way I could discern, anyway.
Like Snuffy Smith in the Army, my early needs consisted of “three squares a day and a dry bed” – the short-sighted goals of one raised mostly in institutions, I’d guess.
So, I like to think that was all Miss Daisy wanted.
Of course, she got more, spending fifteen years growing older alongside her three boys, still looking for them even when they had left home to go out into the world.
Then came Marley, a pup. Since he is easily twice her size, teaching him manners was tiring work for her.
But, the first thing that Marley does every morning is to search out Miss Daisy and give her a few licks.
Respect, I like to think.
So, to ease my feelings of loss I’m writing this little item in hopes that the editor will think it worthy, as we really must now say “Goodbye Miss Daisy.”
