Mathew Lesniak, a longtime Wehoan who left for Long Beach but could not stay away (he relocated back “home” last week after several years in “Iowa by the Sea”), is a photographer and historic preservationist with some deep credentials.
He is embarking upon a photographic journey of West Hollywood’s historic structures – in “details” – to help the folks who drive by the majestic fronts of these protected places an idea of what lies behind the hedges and walls of some of WeHo’s most storied residences.
He begins his series with El Palacio Apartments at 8491-8499 West Fountain Avenue in West Hollywood, California, a two story court yard building, is perhaps the finest example of Churrigueresque Spanish colonial revival style in the city.
El Palacio was built in 1931, by the construction firm of Wesley R. Hauptman and designed by the renowned architect Leland Bryant for a total cost of $125,000.
The U-shaped building sits on a steep sloping hillside, formerly the front gardens of the Louts Apartments. Lushly planted gardens increase the visual effect of the architecture.
The terraced courtyard appears dominated by the buildings vertical bays of multi paned windows. The second level is marked by a variety of balconies with stucco or wrought iron rails
An open octagonal stucco cupola with finialed cap stands over the courtyard from the northwest corner.
Churrigueresque columns flank some doors and are capped by finials with decorative raised relief ornamentation. Repeated throughout the exterior are renaissance style dolphins and peacock motifs.
El Palacio was once owned by actor James Mason, It has been the home of Paulette Goddard, Zazu Pitts, Marilyn Monroe and Dorothy Dandridge to name only a few.
