The year is 1670. A blazing fire engulfs Panama City as Captain Henry Morgan leads a fleet of pirates in an attack on the city.
It will not be long until the democratic privateer leading over one thousand men claims the city as his own, all while sporting a fabulous red and gold petticoat.

Not much is known about the enigmatic Captain Morgan, most of his life is strung from a combination of facts, speculation and romantic fantasy. The average citizen believes Captain Morgan to be a character created for brand recognition, not a true figure in history.
One fact remains true: Henry Morgan’s flagship, The Satisfaction was lost at sea along with four other ships under his reign and believed to be located near Panama City. Finding those ships will unlock the mystery behind the man and reveal a deeper understand of pirate history.
The story begins in 2010 when six iron cannons were discovered at the mouth of the Changres River in Panama. This break excited the archeologists who found the artifacts; the prospect of finding a lost pirate ship would attract funding for a riveting expedition.
Then in 2011, another electrifying recovery surfaced: a 17th century wooden ship’s hull alleged to be part of Morgan’s lost fleet was found.
The archeologists who worked the area thought they’d finally struck gold, literally. Developments like these are what great movies are made of.
In fact, once news spread about the discoveries, various financiers collaborated to fund the expedition to find Captain Morgan’s lost fleet.
A year later, the Captain Morgan rum brand and the Sundance Channel began the production of a film documenting the expedition, hoping for the grand finale that would make waves with critics and audiences alike.
Recovering one of Captain Morgan’s ships would be a huge asset for the rum company and filming the experience would mean great ratings for the channel.

Sundance pulled all the stops to ensure an entertaining viewing experience. The documentary is a combination between the traditional educational approach and the cinema vérité character study. Michael Haussman, an award winning and very eloquent director, was the captain of this endeavor.
His camera accurately captures the personalities of a motley cast composed of: Colleen Atwood- the Hollywood costume designer, Dante Feretti-the Italian production designer, Ben Templesmith-the quirky comic book artist, and Stephen Talty-the New York Times bestselling author.
The documentary, The Unsinkable Henry Morgan, is an expedition to discover the lost fleet at its surface.
However, the documentary works much better when the cast sits together discussing their work and their separate interpretations of the man and the legend.

Captain Morgan’s influence on Panama City and pirate history inspires aesthetic creations from each of the artist’s creative specialties and their work gives us a tangible window into the past.
As each day progresses, we learn a bit more about the truth behind Captain Morgan, we also learn a handful of interesting facts about pirate life.
Meanwhile, as the search continues, two weeks into filming a disheartening discovery occurs. Fritz Hanselmann, the chief underwater archeologist in this expedition pulls up a treasure chest from the sunken ship. This chest reveals what everyone involved was most afraid of: this was not a Captain Morgan ship.
After this update, the documentary abruptly ends, teasing that the search for The Fascination and the rest of Morgan’s fleet continues. Unfortunately, the buildup in this film does not lead to a satisfying ending. The characters were enjoyable, but the audience hardly spends time with them; the film is only thirty minutes.
Naturally, no one can control the ending of a documentary but it seems that once the chances of finding the ship faded, all parties involved cut funding so there was no way to continue rolling.
Had the film been longer, it would not have suffered an identity crisis between choosing the educational approach and the character study. The only downfall to the film really is time because, like a good stew, the ingredients needed to simmer together a bit longer.
While the ultimate goal was not reached, the endeavor was no failure. The documentary is truly enjoyable and quite funny. Captain Morgan sponsored the premiere I attended and melted my heart by providing an open bar with some delicious cocktails, a beautiful wait staff, and delectable appetizers.
The film premiered on the Sundance Channel Sunday, January 20– look for more times here…
