The West Hollywood West Residents Association (WHWRA) last week lost its bid to stop the development of a Restoration Hardware store at 8564-8590 Melrose Avenue (at Westmount Drive).
The planned retail/wholesale showroom would be 30,000 sq ft on two floors with two level of underground parking.
The WHWRA’s concern?
The project received a “negative declaration” that lifted the standard requirement to conduct an environmental impact review (EIR) before official city approval.
In an attempt to stop the redevelopment of the block-long parcel and force an Environmental Impact Report (EIR), the WHWRA petitioned the Los Angeles County Superior Court for redress.
The judge in the case, however, denied their petition out of hand, saying, “(The) petitioner has not made a fair argument, based on substantial evidence, that there may be a significant adverse impact which would require the preparation of an EIR.”
“We’re very disappointed in the judge’s ruling,” said Lauren Meister, former WHWRA president.
She told WeHo News that the association had yet to decide whether to appeal.
They have 60 days from the ruling in which to do that.
“The action the council took – changing a wholesale operation into a retail operation at the last minute and without an EIR,” she said, “was wrong.”
Comparing the building’s proposed size to another nearby retailer, Bristol Farms grocery store at Beverly and Doheny, she said, “This one is bigger in a smaller space. We don’t know what the traffic and parking problems will be because there’s been no EIR done.”
The association had to raise $40,000 necessary to retain the same attorney - Chatten-Brown & Carstens – that won the Tara (1343 N Laurel) Supreme Court victory that stopped the redevelopment of that plot into senior housing units.
Ms. Meister is also heading up the effort to implement term limits in West Hollywood.
A primary reason the group put forward for term limit is the alleged inability to raise sufficient money to field a viable candidate to challenge incumbents.
