One of my favorite books in college, and still a cult classic, is called “Generation of Vipers,” written by a truly misogynistic Philip Wylie.
He condemns everything from religion to Motherhood (Bill Maher would love him).
But, it is none of those topics Wylie prattles about.
I want to to describe an invasion that should be troubling to all of us as a Generation of Vipers - Indians.
Not native American aborigines, but émigrés from Rupee-land.
Like many of you, I am getting all sorts of calls, from morning to night from purported debt collection agencies.
I owe nobody, but somehow my name- as hundreds of thousands of others- cropped up somewhere and these agencies paid someone a few cents on the dollar for the privilege of harassing innocents.
Sometimes, there is an actual person on the line.
More often than not, there is a recording with a voice mentioning an 800-number to call on a “private business matter.”
Either way, the live person one talks to, mostly male but occasionally female, have that weird Indian-English accent, like Robin Williams or Peter Sellers doing an imitation.
Like so many Pakistanis running 7-11’s, this generation of vipers has come to invade our privacy with fake accusations of money owed and a willingness to “settle.”
One such agency, located in Cincinnati, called me dozens of times every day from a minute past eight (when they are legally permitted to call) until nearly nine (the evening cut-off time).
Here is how I finally seemed to get them to stop calling.
Call the number they leave and threaten them with referring them to the Immigration service to come check on green cards, to tell them calmly, you know where they work and live and to watch their backs.
But the most effective method is to get a referee’s whistle, and when they answer, blow that to shatter their ear drums.
All these efforts took a while, but they finally have stopped bothering me.
There are others which still call.
If this is happening to you, get their name of the agency, phone number and report it to the Consumer Fraud division of the State Attorney-General’s office.
AND, when someone “live” answers, tell them you are recording the conservation.
You will immediately get a click and disconnect.
I have no idea why Indians seem to dominate this fraudulent “industry.”
They are truly a Generation of Vipers – from a country which, after Gandhi, has produced nothing of worth or importance, other than over-population and hunger for the masses.
I say, let these vipers go back and practice their deception in Umbai or Bangladesh or New Delhi or Calcutta.
