We all know that WeHo is made up of a lot of gay men and Russian-speaking Jews from Belarus and the Ukraine – but how many and who else is there? Where do they live? How old are they? What do they need from the city?
It has been a long time since an update has been done, so the City of West Hollywood has begun its Community Study process with the mailing of 5,500 surveys to approximately every fourth household in the city.
The last time the city updated it demographic information was in the aftermath of the 2000 census.
Using that 2000 Census, the 2000 Customer Satisfaction Survey, the 1998 Community Needs Assessment Survey, the 1994 Community Needs Assessment Survey, the 1990 Census, the 2000 Housing Element and Vision 2020 (the City of West Hollywood Strategic Plan) the city determined the following:

1) People living with AIDS account for 3 percent of the City population and people living with HIV account for between 8 percent and 11 percent,
2) Six percent of the City population is under 18 years of age and 6 percent of City households include children,
3) People with Disabilities are 24 percent of the City population,
4) Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Transgenders are 41 percent of the City population,
5) Immigrants from the former Soviet Union - 8 percent of the City population,
6) Latinos/Latinas - 9 percent of the City population,
7) Seniors are 17 percent of the City population and,
8) Women over 18 years of age make up 42 percent of the City population.
Wondering if any substantial changes have taken place since then, the city has embarked on an aggressive attempt to reach out to residents to discern their needs.
Besides the 2012 survey’s mailing in English and Russian, (with an option to request a Spanish-language survey), those households that receive the randomly-mailed survey will have an option to complete it online.

Additionally, over the next four weeks, the City will also be hosting several focus groups, and a series of pop up workshops.
All West Hollywood community members are invited to participate in one or more element of the Community Study.
“The pop up workshops are designed to generate even more public feedback in our Community Study process,” said Daphne Dennis, Interim Director of the Human Services and Rent Stabilization Department for the City of West Hollywood.
“By going out to highly-trafficked areas of the city, we will be able to engage the community in activities that provide them with an opportunity to indicate their preferences and priorities for social services, target populations and funding,” said Ms. Dennis.
ASL interpretation is available at the pop up workshops with 72-hour notice, and there will also be activities for children.
All of the pop up workshops will take place in areas that are wheelchair accessible.
Below is the schedule for the pop up workshops:
· Saturday, February 2, 2013 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at West Hollywood Park, 647 N. San Vicente Boulevard (event will be held on Robertson Boulevard side of the park)
· Saturday, February 2, 2013 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the West Hollywood Library, 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard

· Monday, February 4, 2013 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the Community Center at Plummer Park, 7377 Santa Monica Boulevard
· Thursday, February 7, 2013 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on the corner of Santa Monica Boulevard near San Vicente Boulevard

· Saturday, February 9, 2013 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on the eastside of Movietown Plaza, 7304 Santa Monica Boulevard
Information about ongoing events related to the Community Study will be available at www.weho.org/communitystudy and www.facebook.com/WehoCares.
For more information, or if you are interested in participating in a focus group, please call (323) 848-6510 or e-mail communitystudy@weho.org Russian-speaking residents may call (323) 848-6326. For the deaf and hard of hearing, please call (323) 848-6496.
