After President Barack Obama announced on Wednesday his list of 23 Executive Orders designed to reduce gun violence in America, two prominent local political leaders representing West Hollywood lauded his actions.

The city’s new Congress member, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), a former federal prosecutor and outspoken legislator on gun violence, who also serves as a member of the Congressional Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, praised the President’s announcement, saying, “This morning I joined with other Congress Members, Vice President Biden, and the families of many of the twenty children and six adults killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School to hear the President’s plan to address the scourge of gun violence in our nation.
“The President articulated a reasonable set of proposals – both through executive order and Congressional action – that will keep guns out of the hands of criminals and the mentally ill, while respecting the right of law-abiding Americans to own a gun.
“As the President described, this requires a multifaceted approach, including universal background checks, making sure we keep better mental health records, banning high capacity ammunition clips, and reinstating and improving the Assault Weapons Ban.
“I am looking forward to continuing to work with the House Gun Violence Task Force to move gun violence prevention legislation through Congress, including a bill I am introducing to ensure that victims of gun violence have the same rights to hold gun makers and gun sellers accountable for negligence, and reintroducing legislation I authored last session to crack down on straw purchasers of guns who assist others in illegally obtaining weapons without background checks.”
West Hollywood Mayor Pro Tempore Abbe Land, also a longtime supporter of stricter gun laws, applauded President Obama’s new plan to protect children and communities by reducing gun violence.
“Thank you President Obama for making ending gun violence a top priority,” said Ms. Land.
“I applaud you for your historic and comprehensive plan to protect our communities from gun violence – an issue I care very passionately about. Gun violence is a pressing issue and I am pleased to see you take a strong and clear stance to develop a complete plan to save lives. Now, we must focus our efforts on calling to Congress to support this legislation,” she said.

The President’s plan:
· Require background checks for all gun sales
· Strengthen the background check system for gun sales
· Pass a new, stronger ban on assault weapons
· Limit ammunition magazines to 10 rounds
· Finish the job of getting armor-piercing bullets off the streets
· Give law enforcement additional tools to prevent and prosecute gun crime
· End the freeze on gun violence research
· Make our schools safer with new resource officers and counselors, better emergency response plans, and more nurturing school climates
· Ensure quality coverage of mental health treatment, particularly for young people.
In 1996, Ms. Land led the way for West Hollywood to become the first California city to ban the sale of Saturday Night Specials handguns that led to 31 other cities passing similar legislation.
The State of California eventually banned the so-called “junk guns.”
In 2007, she co-authored municipal ordinances requiring the mandatory reporting of the theft or loss of firearms and an ordinance which requires firearm dealers to post warning signs where guns and ammunition are sold.
