The crime rate increased from 2011 to 2012 in the City of West Hollywood nearly 11 percent, said the LA County Sheriff’s Department in their annual round up released last week.
While of concern, that figure has public and law enforcement breathing a sigh of relief, as crime statistics released in July portended a record increase .

Incidents of reported violent and property crime in 2012 totaled 2,108, while only 1,901 got reported in 2011.
The report follows "Part I crimes," those crimes that include murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny theft, grand theft auto and arson and figure into the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)’ nationwide crime reporting.
Crime in West Hollywood – identified as those crimes reported to the WeHo branch Station (which includes Universal City and some other small areas of unincorporated LA County), were up two and a half times the countywide numbers.
From 2011 to 2012, crimes reported to WeHo Station went up 10.9 percent while those reported to LASD countywide went up 4.16 percent.
The Sheriff’s Department trumpeted a reduction in the homicide rate, registering a "five-year continuous decrease, resulting in a 37.5 percent decrease in homicides in 2012 compared to five years ago, and the lowest number of homicides in sheriff's patrol areas since 1970," according to the department.
There were no murders recorded inside West Hollywood and therefore no increase from 2011, however, that fails to account for the murder of Alan Thomas, age 51, a Metropolitan Transportation District driver in May at the corner of Santa Monica and La Cienega Boulevards.
Sheriff’s spokesperson Steve Whitmore told WeHo News that the killing was not counted among WeHo crimes, as the crime happened aboard a Metro bus and, hence, occurred in the transportation district’s jurisdiction, and so was reported to the FBI as a part of their crime numbers.
Rape was off 36.8 percent.
Robbery was up 9.4 percent.
Aggravated assault fell 7.5 percent.
Burglary went up 20.4 percent.
Larceny and theft increased 14.3 percent.

Grand theft auto rose 1.7 percent.
Arson fell 25.2 percent (despite Harry Burkhardt’s alleged arson spree spanning December, 20122 and January 2012).
The increases in burglary have more to do with crimes of opportunity and automobiles than anything else.
According to Lt. Dave Smith, the unsecured parking garages that lie underneath so many of the city’s apartment buildings are a magnet for thieves who can burgle numerous autos within minutes,
“Don’t keep anything of valuable visible in your car,” he told WeHo News. “If it can be seen, it’s an invitation to be taken.
The same admonition applies to street parking – do not keep things in your car you do not mind sharing with criminals who travel through the city.
Increases in robbery can be explained, he said, by a cell phone ring that operated within the city until they were nabbed in July and other street robberies in which the city’s party-goers fall prey to late-night thieves.
Lt. Smith encourages people to take great care in returning to their cars after spending a night out in West Hollywood, to stay in well-lit places and to travel in a group wherever possible.
Larceny and petty theft is an endemic problem due to the Target on the city’s Eastside and their aggressive shoplifting enforcement policies, he says.
“Target is really good about reporting every incident,” according to Lt. Smith, where other, smaller retailers might let a petty thief go if they catch them so long as they get their merchandise.
