Former state lawmaker Sheila Kuehl has announced her bid for the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on Thursday.
The pioneering lesbian legislator seeks replace termed-out Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky in the 3rd District—which spans from the valley to the Santa Monica Mountains to the Westside including West Hollywood—when he leaves office in 2014.
"Honestly speaking, I probably made the decision several years ago," Kuehl, 71, told the Los Angeles Times on Thursday about her candidacy.
Ms. Kuehl served six years in the Assembly starting in 1994, and eight years in the State Senate.
She was the first openly gay person elected to the California Legislature, as well as the first woman in the state’s history to be named Speaker pro Tempore of the Assembly.
She was termed out in 2008.
Ms. Kuehl wrote and shepherded through the legislature anti-discrimination laws that strengthened and expanded California’s hate crime statutes, clarified and strengthened the general protections against discrimination and harassment in the education code and later expanded those protections to cover discrimination on the basis of actual or perceived sexual orientation and gender identity, created the nation’s first paid family leave program, established the rights contained in Roe vs. Wade in California statute, overhauled California’s child support services system, made individuals who engage in sexual harassment of their co-workers personally liable under the Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA) for their conduct, required workplace accommodation for pregnant employees under FEHA and strengthened the provisions of California’s hate crimes statutes under which hate crimes based on gender are prosecuted.
More recently, she has produced a series of cable shows for the City of West Hollywood, drafted Model State Codes of Discrimination and Bullying for the Williams Institute at the UCLA Law School and consulted on a variety of public policy issues.
In her career, she also authored many bills addressing the environment, housing, disabilities, labor, working families and education.
Harvard-educated, Ms. Kuehl began adult life as a TV actress, appearing as Zelda Gilroy in the television series, “The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis.”
Sshe owns her own consulting business and runs the Public Policy Institute at Santa Monica College.
Serving on the Board of Supervisors is "really the only place I can imagine using all the things that I learned in the Legislature in 14 years,” Kuehl told KPCC radio.
She said her priorities are the environment, transportation, health and human services.
She posted a note on her web site saying, “Beginning early next year, I will start campaigning, fundraising, contacting folks for endorsements, setting up a website and a million social media connections (oh brave new world) and generally letting folks know why I think I would be a good choice for this seat.”
