You’ve heard the stories. Perfectly healthy, stable and well-adjusted men, sometimes professionals with good educations, take a snort or two of meth at a party.

Their sex lives turn around – suddenly they are free to do and feel the things in a bedroom they never quite dared or allowed themselves.

UCLA Vine Street Clinic helps people kick the meth cycle of addition.

They slowly begin to add the drug to their weekends; usually Friday night to dance and to “party” with sex partners over Saturday so they can recover over Sunday to return to work Monday.

Then the “partying,” known as PNP, lasts a little longer; perhaps other drug such as ketamine (K) or Ecstasy (X) are added to the mix.

Soon, a bump on Monday morning is needed to function. Eventually, the using doesn’t really end because the recovery gets too difficult – it’s easier to stay a little high than to sleep all those hours.

They’re addicts to one of the most difficult drugs to stop using – even harder than cigarettes.

Some of those men acquire HIV, or Hepatitis. Many lose their jobs, their homes, their friends and loved ones.

The Centers for Disease Control says that assessments show that men who have sex with men (MSM) who use methamphetamine may increase their sexual risk factors.

For example, they may use condoms less often, have more sex partners and may engage in practices that elevate their risk for HIV infection, such as unprotected receptive anal sex and perhaps other HIV-related drug-use risk factors.

You may have recently started to use meth. You may look at your dealer, who used to be a realtor or agent. Maybe you talk to one of your anonymous tricks found online to discover that they were once an accountant, but now work part-time at a bath house.

Dr. Steven Shoptaw, one of the nation's leading meth experts, is director of the program.

You may fear some of the consequences listed above. But you may not be able to quit.

That’s where the UCLA Vine Street Clinic (VSC), comes in…

Established in 2005, they have provided thousands of individuals from West Hollywood, Hollywood and the greater Los Angeles area with care.

The UCLA Vine Street Clinic’s dedicated team of clinicians, therapists and support staff serves our community by providing clinical services and conducting research on addictions, HIV, and the intersection of the two.

The team at VSC is committed to bringing the best in academia to communities in need.

Because they know that addiction and health requires a human touch, the staff includes neighborhood folks, such as West Hollywood residents.

The clinic Director, Dr. Shoptaw, worked for 10 years as a Principal Investigator with Friends Research Institute, Inc., during which time, his program of clinical research with substance abusers in West Hollywood and other communities led the way in developing strategies for harm reduction and cessation of use.

He sits on the board of a local community-based organization.

Current programs offered at VSC include a behavioral medicine clinic, where UCLA Attending Psychologists and advanced psychology students provide low and no-cost counseling for the treatment of various addictions.

A clinical trial is underway for the treatment of methamphetamine dependence that includes medication and counseling. And an addiction support group meets every Thursday evening.
