First of all, if you are reading this, the Mayans were wrong.
Actually, the end of the year is usually a time for reflection and so I harken back to simpler times, when creativity went beyond crating a whole new vocabulary with thumbs called “texting,” a time before computers and IPads and Play Stations and Facebook and social networks of all kinds.
I spent my most creative years in a time when innovating products and services with the consumer and not the bottom line or offshore accounts were the priority.
In the 1960s and ‘70’s, I was part of the creative forces that introduced some of the leading consumer products of their time.
First, the Kodak Instamatic cameras. I was one of three writers spending months in snowy Rochester NY, when Rochester was known as the home of Kodak worldwide.
Our team developed a week-long series of sales meetings that introduced the concept of Instamatic cameras to Kodak’s sales force and then to photo finishers who now needed all new equipment and new film printing techniques to handle what everyone knew would be a revolution in picture taking (which it was, at the time).
That meant not only presentations to the principals of the photo finishing industry, but finding training for their employees. I even flew with the Kodak top brass in their corporate jet, writing speeches for them to give to industry press.
Next, I was hired by IBM, along with another head writer, to introduce the Selectric typewriter.
I came up with (I still think) was a brilliant idea, used by IBM salesmen to introduce the Selectric in offices coast to coast.
I set a glass of water next to what on ordinary typewriters would be the carriage. Then someone typed. The glass of water did not move.
This was a time when all IBM’ers still wore dark suits and white shirts. They immediately knew I was an outsider, because I did not wear a dark sit or a white shirt.

But, we all got along and the introduction was a rousing success.
Alas, both the Instamatic and the Selectric have gone, replaced by computers and Razr’s.
Introducing and training bank employees about the innovative machines called ATMs was one of my tasks at Citibank (when it was still First National City Bank).
Then I worked with the advertising agency, Dancer Fitzgerald, to introduce the concept of the Toyota as an American family car (eventually overtaking American auto makers in both price and total sales.
I worked with American Express on their credit cards, when the company’s elitist concept meant no use of the card at (gasp) gas stations or grocery stores).
That was left to my working with MasterCard (then known as MasterCharge).
I have grown older, OK, “old”, but the creative juices still flow. But, I am not a techie, and there is no need for me to encourage Target or Walmart of K-Mart.
I even tried a novel concept for Starbucks, but their President never returned my letters and E-mails (so if I HAVE to go outside for a caffeine fix I go to Coffee Bean).
However, 2013 is here, so assuming the Mayans got it all wrong, I still have miles to go before I sleep.

Werner Haas is a West Hollywood writer whose latest novel is named "Wasps." | Summary: Long Island is no longer a place for complacent suburbanites. It is now a festering ground for anti-social activity by bored or power-hungry teens.
The Wasps is a story of such a neo-Nazi gang made up of otherwise "ordinary" middle-class young people.
