Kicking off a New Year, my thoughts inevitably return to the many New Years past and the friendships developed over them.
For many years, I have been pleased with the friends my three boys gave made.

Starting in early grammar school, the nicest kids were part of my boys’ play groups. Later, in the sports teams which became popular, many of their same pals were there with them.
We were watching not just our kids growing up, but also other kids.
West Hollywood had no organized sports for children so we went to the nearest sports programs. Some were sponsored by the City of Loa Angles, some by Beverly Hills.
Our three boys were not to be denied, thus we were not just “soccer parents,” but baseball and basketball parents as well. This was ion the days of “new parenting” when Mom and Dad did not simply watch their children play ball, we were either encouraged or coerced into very active roles.
As the children progressed through the seasons, we might be coaches, “team Moms” or some other office vital to the operation of the team. For two years, we even operated (at a profit for the first time) the snack bar for the Beverly Hills Little League.
As you might expect, even the celebrity parents had to pitch in. Through all this time, about ten years or so, we made friends with the parents and our boys made friends with their teammates, many of whom they still see.
So many of those boys - we knew very few girls – were wonderfully raised to be courteous, gracious, understanding, helpful people. When their desires and talents took them elsewhere, they have stayed in touch with each other.
Facebook, of course, and other electronic methods of communication have simplified that. But, many remember that our house was always open to them as we see or hear from them today.
It’s been a delight to see how they have progressed toward their dreams. In our house, we have a lawyer and an architect.

Others, like Milton did become a doctor and Josh is now a photographer of note and a professor, teaching that art, Lizzie is a TV star by gosh.
David, an accomplished pianist, is hiding out in Mexico burnishing his writing skills. (David – come back soon. Our piano needs a workout.) Luc is a warm and wonderful host in his family’s restaurant.
Delightful Liz is living happily in New York, reviving the homey art of knitting with much success. Many others still stay in touch and our life is expanded because of them.
In looking back to those delicious days of their youth when they were forming ideas of their future, we could see that at least some part of the world would be sane and reasonable and that much of the better part of our culture would continue.
Knowing these people, now in their late twenties and early thirties, we can be sure of it.
Our children and their long friendships are the future – and our hope which is stronger because of them.
Looking back is what old folks are supposed to have time to do when they can no longer have certain responsibilities and chores of a certain nature.
It is a luxury, I think, to be able to review one’s life, to relive our own salad days as young parents, but what pleasure such ruminating brings.
It makes looking ahead so much more pleasant.
