The calendars change numbers to indicate that a new cycle of 365 days is beginning.
But, from my point of view, this is now a new year, but a continuation of the joys and the hurt of years past.
It saddened me to ready the feelings of abandonment by many in our LGBT community whose families used the excuse of a straight family gathering to keep them from “endangering” other family members, as if being gay or lesbian was a sort of malaria or flu.
There is a reason suicide rates spike during these Christian and calendar holidays.
Even the mythical Santa had elves (God forbid that would make him a pedophile), but many who profess a yearning for adventures with the same sex find themselves as pariahs, coal in their straight parents and siblings holiday stockings.
This so-called new year brings the old year’s baggage with it – political, metaphysical, emotional, fiscal.
As a philosopher once mused, those who forget history are doomed to repeat it.
Even as we look with envy on those who have found life partners, gay, straight, bi or asexual- there is still that glint of despair at not having found anyone compatible enough to share joy and sorrow, good times and bad.
To those of us advancing in age, happiness is often not something you experience any longer, but just a memory, les temps perdu.
Maybe Oscar Levant had it right when he said that it’s not what you are but what you don’t become that hurts.
And so January begins- not really a “new” year but a continuation of our search for stability and peace of mind, love and a sort of 24/7 comfort level.
So, rather than use that well-worn cliché “Happy New Year!” instead, let me wish that the joys of the past continue and that the hurt and anger and sorry fade into distant memory.
Although all too seldom seen that way, “tomorrow” is really a word of optimism.
