Beginning in 1978 with a car accident, I experienced neck pain that eventually led to surgery to correct. A year after the surgery, however, I still suffered from neck pain and sought out my regular body worker.

That practitioner was recuperating from hernia surgery, so he sent me to his teacher, Mitch Gries.
Mitch told me he was going to massage a small muscle that was located oddly around and under my Adam’s Apple. With a twist of his fingers the pain was gone and never returned, so when I have pains of any kind I see Mitch.
That was years ago.
In mid-May I was in Boston for business and all of a sudden I felt a deep, dull pain under my right shoulder blade in my back. I didn’t do anything specific to cause it - the pain just came from nowhere.
A nerve must have been pinched because my right hand lost strength so I couldn’t even push the button on the top of a can of shaving to get shaving cream out, and there was numbness in that hand and in my right arm.
When I returned home I saw Mitch as quickly as I could get an appointment and experienced about 30 percent less pain immediately after our session. The next morning I woke up feeling about 80 percent less pain, but my hand was still too weak to make shaving cream or light a lighter.
I saw Mitch each day and every time the pain was less. Three days of treatments and I could light the lighter one time. On the fourth day I could light it three times and just barely get the shaving cream to work.
Over the three weeks that I’ve seen him for this, I have only a very small amount of pain in my arm a few days a week and my hand has regained most of its strength.
So where did Mitch come from?

As a 6-year old child he started massaging his Dad, who had severe rheumatoid arthritis. Mitch was a ballet dancer in New York City in 1976, and danced with five dance companies in Phoenix and Tucson.
He started massaging other dancers in 1977 and took massage classes in college and also took courses in structural integration, Therapeutic Stretching and became certified in the St. John’s Method of Neuromuscular Massage Therapy, which I think may be the single best technique a masseur can master.
In his first year he massaged the Dance Theater of Harlem, the first international cast of A Chorus Line and famed Russian ballet star Rudolph Nuryev, known as one of the world’s very best.
He moved to Los Angeles hoping to work on maybe the best ballet dancer in the world, Mikhail Baryshnikov. The American Ballet Theater came to LA in 1978 and Mitch was introduced to Baryshnikov.
Mitch worked on Baryshnikov four times that month and continued to work with him for the next nine years whenever he was in Southern California, including three nights at the Hollywood Bowl when Baryshnikov had an inflamed Achilles tendon that was hampered his jumping.
By the third evening Baryshnikov was dancing at almost 100%.
To date Mitch has worked on countless world-class dancers and stars, including Natasha Makarova, the Royal Ballet of England, Juliet Prowse, The Joffrey Ballet, West Side Story’s entire run at the Pantages Theater, Elton John, Randy Quaid, Al Pacino and Richard Gere, as well as Michael Jackson and his dancers during the making of Thriller.
Once when Georgina Parkinson of the Royal Ballet of England was on crutches because of strained calf muscles, her doctor told her she wouldn’t be able to dance for at least ten days.
Mitch had her back on stage the next night.
After Mitch successfully treated most of the cast of “A Chorus Line” for injuries, the manager wanted to take Mitch to Broadway to be their full-time masseur.
Are you hearing what I’m getting at?
If you have painful muscles, strained tendons or pain that is chronic, Mitch Gries is the most amazing body-worker imaginable. The world’s best ballet dancers seek him out.
Shouldn’t you?
