West Hollywood, California (March 8, 2010) - I don't know whether it's the dog hair all over my Derek Lam skirt or the look I get in my eyes every time I see an animal, but people know a sucker for animals when they see one, apparently. Melissa Bacelar can give you insights into your dog’s or cat’s (or bird’s or fish’s) frame of mind. WeHo News. |
Rushing around on Monday some random woman says to me, "look at the puppy!" Before I can say, HUH? I see this man and his silver pit bull.
I am steps away from a soy latte and the blue eyes of a 5 month old puppy stop me in my tracks. The man asks me if I am a dog lover and of course I say that I am and he begins the story of little Bella.
She was bought by a friend of a friend and they couldn't handle her.
So now this man is walking around with this unvaccinated, unspayed baby all over WeHo.
This little girl is happy and seemingly healthy. The man loves her but just can't care for her.
He is living in his car with the pup and she obviously needs more.
He has a cell phone and I will be buying her food, getting her vet care and of course finding her a new home. How does a latte turn in to hundreds of dollars?
I turn away reluctantly and am back on the coffee mission when my phone rings. I pick it up and a woman frantically needs to speak with me about her cat.
This cat is sick and the woman has no money to take her to the vet.
The business side of me is thinking that you shouldn't have an animal if you can't afford vet care but the push over side knows too many animals are killed every day and if I can help someone help their companion I have to.
As she is explaining what is going on with her cat I clearly hear CANCER. She continues to explain the symptoms and I start to feel my throat close.
Before she even tells me I know there is a lump on the cats neck and I know that lump will get bigger and stop the cat from breathing.
I am torn now. I do believe the cat can be healed but I also know if I say CANCER the woman will break down.
It's times like these that being a Psychic is a burden. I am not good at disappointing people.
I can't even fire people or break up with people. But the cat’s life is what is important.
So I take a deep breath and tell the woman that she needs to treat the cat very aggressively if she wants the cat to live.
I gave her the number of a healer (who I know will work pro bono) and tell her that her cat is asking for Tuna and Sun Light.
The woman was grateful and of course I tell her not to worry about payment. I give her a list of herbs to buy and ask her to call me with an update in two days.
Now I really need that Soy Latte with a triple shot of espresso.
The card board cup is about to hit my lips, as I go through lists of people in my head who may be willing to foster the pit puppy.
Just then an email comes through.
Some one dumped an 11 year old Lab at SPOT! This dog is perfect and was loved and because of his age his people want him gone so they can get a puppy!?! This is it.
It's Monday and I am just about done.

On one hand I have a man who is homeless scraping up change to feed a dog that he can't keep and on the other I have a couple, financially stable who can't deal with a dog that gave them the best years of his life.
WOW! How do we change this?
This week I have been blessed enough to talk to over 40 companions, dogs, cats, horses and even two birds who are loved and cherished.
But I also have received over 400 emails about dogs and cats who desperately need homes or they will be killed.
I can only think that by euthanizing these companions we are destroying evidence. We are destroying living, feeling beings because humans are irresponsible.

What if we made it mandatory for every dog and cat to be chipped at their first Vet visit and the person who brings them in must be responsible for them for the rest of their lives? Maybe then people would think twice before buying or adopting a companion.
These lives are to precious to give up because they are old, or difficult, or get hair on our $400 skirts! I am going to leave this week saying thank you to all of you wonderful people who love your companions.
The French Bull Dog I saw at Basix, the cattle dog that keeps eating his moms shoes on Spaulding, the gorgeous Afghans and their dads who drink coffee on Santa Monica Blvd everyday!! These are the guardians that make me smile!

I am looking forward to your questions and emails and hope to tell a few funny stories about the fabulous pets and people I meet in WeHo.
