WeHo Needs Off-Leash Dog Parks

West Hollywood, California (Thursday, June 18, 2009) - I live one block away from Plummer Park.

In recent months, the WeHo Sheriff and L.A. Animal Control have been aggressively enforcing the dog leash ordinances in this area.

I don’t know why, but it's just outrageous. The city of WeHo prides itself on being "The Pet Friendliest Destination in Southern California."

Nothing could be further from the truth.

There is only one designated off leash park in the city of West Hollywood - William S. Hart Park tucked between the Sunset Tower and Standard Hotels steps below the Sunset Strip.

Two others exist a short drive away in Los Angeles, at the top of Laurel Canyon and in Runyon Canyon.

Most people need places to exercise their dogs which are convenient and don’t require that they set their alarm clocks at 5:00 a.m. so that they can drive their dog to one of these off leash locations to exercise their dog before making it to work at 8:00.

This past month, the police have been at Plummer Park every single day issuing citations to dog owners who are simply standing in the grass while their dogs frolic and play with other dogs around them.

At Wattles Park, the LAPD has been a constant presence in recent months, issuing or threatening to issue citations.

Poinsettia Park used to be a place that one could take a dog to play off leash and, though it wasn’t an official off leash park, the city turned a blind eye.

Now, the LAPD are there every day. Dog owners are forced to "duck and hide" every time we enter a park with our dogs.

Treated like criminals.

Why doesn’t the city designate a few hours each day at several parks throughout the city for off leash dog exercise?
