After 6 years of effort by residents, new parking and street sweeping regulations have been posted in parts of West Hollywood that will allow residents to park on all residential streets in the affected area. "This is the first time since before cityhood (over 20 years) that residents will be able to park in front of their own homes. We are very pleased," said Terry Leftgoff, chair of the West Hollywood West Residents Association (WHWRA) Parking Committee.
"West Hollywood West is the only area of the city where residents are prohibited from parking in front of their own homes," said Leftgoff. Until now, half of every residential street is dedicated to commercial parking 6 days each week. "The impact of exclusive commercial parking on residential neighborhoods has been enormous," said Leftgoff. "This is a welcome step by the City Council to alleviate these impacts."
West Hollywood Department of Transportation staff changing the parking and street sweeping signs (Signage incorrectly states March 31st effective date, actual implementation is March 1) |
The regulations, part of a 6-month test, cover an area bounded by San Vicente, La Cienega, Melrose and Beverly Blvd. Regulations will vary by block, but residents will now be able to park on both sides of all residential streets within the test area. If the test is successful, the changes will be made permanent and another test will expand to the western part of West Hollywood West bounded by Doheny, San Vicente, Melrose and Beverly Blvd.
Although signs incorrectly state the test goes into effect March 31st, the new parking regulations actually began March 1st. The city is allowing a 2-week grace period for ticketing during transition to the new street-sweeping schedule.
